Understanding what’s going on can make a big difference.
This page is here to help you make sense of terms like cognitive impairment and dementia, and learn what support is available, whether you're just starting to notice changes or already navigating a diagnosis.
-
Cognitive function refers to the many mental processes that help us live day to day — not just memory.
This includes:
Planning and decision making (executive function)
Language and understanding
Emotions and behaviour
Movement and coordination (praxis)
Spatial awareness and visual processing
Memory is just one piece of the bigger picture.
-
Cognitive impairment is when your thinking, memory or concentration isn’t quite what it used to be — but you’re still getting through daily life without major difficulty.
It can be caused by a range of things like stress, medication, illness, or could be an early sign of something more. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye on any changes and seek a proper review when something feels off.
-
Dementia is a broad term used to describe conditions that affect how the brain works — like memory, problem-solving, language and judgement.
These memory and thinking problems are significant enough to be impacting your day to day functioning, making “dementia” different from “cognitive impairment”.
There are many different types of dementia, with the most common in Australia being Alzheimer’s disease and Vascular Dementia (related to strokes).

Support doesn’t stop at diagnosis. We stay connected with you — offering regular check-ins, advice, and continuity of care to help you feel supported and in control, every step of the way.
Reducing Stigma
Talking about dementia can feel confronting, but avoiding the conversation only adds to the fear and confusion. At Sensus Cognition, we believe that education and open dialogue are key to reducing stigma and improving understanding of cognitive health.
Through community events, clinical support, and accessible information, we’re helping people feel more confident having these conversations, whether they’re living with dementia, caring for someone who is, or working in a healthcare setting.
The following resources widen the discussion about dementia and include personal stories to highlight Lived Experiences.
